What is content?

Contents

The word content is often used online when referring to the contents of a profile, page or video. When talking about websites, we mean the text, images or videos on a page.

The content on a website can often be managed using a CMS (content management system). The content of your website is extremely important so that visitors to your website can find relevant information about your products or services.

What is a CMS?

Content is important for Google

Search engines such as Google also evaluate your website based on its content: Is the text relevant to a keyword? Do people read the content of your website, or do they immediately click away? Do people click further through the website from the landing page? In short, is the text compelling and not filled with nonsense?

Is the content of your website good, but are you still scoring poorly? Then it could also be a technical problem, such as the speed or structure of your website. You can assess the speed of your website via
pagespeed.web.dev. Pay particular attention to the score on mobile phones, as this is where most internet traffic comes from. The most common error is that images are too large, which slows down the loading time.

What is good content?

When writing good content, it is useful to take a number of things into account. We have listed them briefly here.

  • Which target group views or reads the page? Write in a style that you expect will resonate best with them.
  • Content must be written with a specific goal in mind. For example, increasing visitor numbers and improving conversions 1.
  • Before a visitor arrives at a website, the content must also be optimised for search engines such as Google. Otherwise, visitors will not know that your website exists. Fortunately, content written for people is also becoming easier to find in Google. Do take into account popular keywords for which you want to rank highly.

How can you tell if your content works?

To measure is to know. Without measuring how your current content is performing, it is difficult to improve it. So make sure you use Google Analytics or a plugin that allows you to track your website statistics. Useful statistics to know include visitor numbers per page, which buttons are clicked, how far visitors scroll and how long they stay on a page or on your website.

If you are a novice copywriter or content writer, it is best to start with content that answers questions people often ask on Google. Write a number of pages that are slightly different from each other and see which ones score well. Now you know which writing style or topics are interesting and where you can focus your attention. It can sometimes take 2-4 months before you can really draw conclusions from this, so patience is important.

It is important to keep an eye on GDPR legislation when it comes to collecting data and placing analytics or tracking cookies. We have written an article about this,
which you can read here.

  1. Conversions are actions whereby the visitor to a page is encouraged to make a purchase, request a quote or seek contact. ↩︎
