What is HTTPS?

HTTPS is a protocol that secures the connection between you and a Web site so that no one online can peek in between. It is short for “hypertext transfer protocol secure. The data is encrypted so that your data is only readable by the original sender and receiver, which makes interim editing of data by others impossible.

Originally, it was mainly used for payments and Internet banking. Recently, it has become standard for all websites to support it because, in part, it can prevent people from being scammed. Google indicates that through the most common systems, 96% use HTTPS (Aug.2024). While this already helps a lot, it is still important to pay attention to which website you visit, always check the URL 1 bar and whether the connection is secure before leaving your data anywhere.

Here’s how to tell if a website is HTTPS secure

At the top of your browser 2 near the URL bar, it often says on the left when a connection is not secure. At the time of writing, the Chrome browser describes it as text, but in the past it has also been an icon of a lock with a cross through it. On websites where you see this, it is wise not to leave any data and leave the website. Especially when financial or personal information is involved.
